FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — BRUSSELS We are monitoring with growing alarm the uncontrolled proliferation of foam-based perforated footwear, which poses a direct existential threat to the aesthetic sovereignty of the Union. The Commission views this breach of podiatric standards as a destabilizing force against the very fabric of European elegance. "The structural integrity of our sidewalks cannot be compromised by unregulated thermoplastic polymers," stated Elara Vorn-Smythe, Commissioner for Pedestrian Visual Cohesion and Lower Limb Aesthetics. "Allowing these ventilated voids to circulate freely undermines decades of artisanal cobbling heritage." We believe this trend is a byproduct of the regulatory Wild West of the United States, where comfort is prioritized over the dignity of the public square. To mitigate this crisis, we are implementing the Footwear Ventilation Directive (EU) 2024/882, which mandates that no footwear may possess more than 3.5 circular perforations per square decimeter, each not exceeding a diameter of 8 millimeters. Any decorative charms must undergo a 48-hour mechanical stress test to ensure they do not become ballistic hazards within the Single Market. The Commission reminds all parties that solidarity is not optional.
