FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — BRUSSELS The Commission views with deep concern the reported fluctuations in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), an unacceptable breach of the hydrological stability upon which the Union’s agricultural quotas depend. Such unilateral oceanic shifting represents a direct assault on the predictability of the Single Market. “The Atlantic must understand that the free movement of currents does not exempt it from the Rule of Law,” stated Elara Vance-Vermeulen, Commissioner for Sub-Aquatic Discipline and Marine Punctuality. “Unregulated thermal diversion is a hallmark of the chaotic American coastline, and we will not allow European salt-levels to be compromised by such erratic behavior.” We have therefore ratified the Ocean Stability Directive (EU) 2024/992, mandating that all North Atlantic currents maintain a minimum flow rate of 18 sverdrups, subject to a 0.04% variance. Failure to comply will result in the immediate deployment of the European Standing Committee on Salinity Harmonization to initiate kinetic stabilization. We cannot permit a climate of uncertainty to undermine our democratic institutions. The Commission reminds all parties that solidarity is not optional.
